The Ockner Residence occupies a meadow site cleared by a wildfire two decades ago in the High Desert of Central Oregon.  The region's harsh climate of 100+ degree summer days with sub zero winter temperatures and the ever present intense sunshine were key factors that influenced the building's layout.  Additionally, striking the balance between maintaining privacy and capturing incredible mountain views was critical as the home sits in an existing neighborhood with houses to be built immediately to each side.  Fourteen foot overhangs were employed to the west and north elevations to protect the home from intense afternoon summer sun.  A south facing courtyard was created for a completely private outdoor experience.  Materials were chosen for low maintenance and to create a sense of 'appropriateness to place' as prescribed by the design guidelines.  The indoor-outdoor connection is enhanced with slide away corner doors in the main living space and twelve foot tall transparent walls surrounding the private court.  PIQUE collaborated with Craig Miller of Your Living Places in Bozeman, Montana to create this warm, contemporary, open residence.
